Oliver Rowland won the FIA Formula 2 Feature race in Monaco. British driver profited from the Charles Leclerc’s bad luck and scored the first victory in 2017.

Local hero Charles Leclerc started from pole position in the Feature race, accompanied by his old GP3 Series rival Alexander Albon in the front row. Leclerc started well and quickly built a solid advantage to Albon, Oliver Rowland, Artem Markelov, and Nobuharu Matsushita.

The race was slowed down on lap 7 when the safety car was deployed after Nicholas Latifi’s car stopped at the entrance of the tunnel. Many drivers decided to pit then but Leclerc wasn’t among them. The Monegasque pitted on lap just before the safety car was deployed again while his closest rivals Rowland and Markelov pitted after it was deployed.

Charles Leclerc was unlucky in the first race in Monaco

Unlucky Leclerc lost the lead and when the race was restarted, he again had to pit due to a trouble with the left front tire and soon retired from the race. However, he scored points for pole position as well as for scoring the fastest lap of the race.

Rowland became the race leader, with a small advantage to Markelov, Matsushita, Albon, and Luca Ghiotto. British driver of the DAMS team was able to keep his lead and to win the race with a small advantage to Markelov while Matsushita completed the podium finishing almost 13s behind a winner.
