Formula 2 at Spa: Leclerc stripped off victory, Markelov is the winner
Artem Markelov (Russian Time) is the winner of the Feature race of the FIA Formula 2 Championship at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. For Markelov, it’s his third win of the season.
Originally, he finished second, behind Charles Leclerc (Prema Powerteam) and ahead of Oliver Rowland (DAMS), but both Leclerc and Rowland have been disqualified from the race after their cars failed post-race scrutineering due to excessive wear to the underfloor plank.
Leclerc was supposed to share the front row with Nicholas Latifi (DAMS) but some mechanical issues prevented Canadian driver to start the race. Rowland started from P3 and attacked Leclerc in Turn 1, but he didn’t manage to pass, suffering some damage on his car instead.
Luca Ghiotto (Russian Time) progressed to P3 on the opening lap, which was interruped by the Virtual Safety Car after Nobuharu Matsushita stopped on the track. After all drivers made their obligatory pit stops, Leclerc, Rowland and Ghiotto retained their podium positions. Behind their back, Artem Markelov progressed from P6 to P4, overtaking Nyck de Vries and Gustav Malja.
After that, Markelov was chasing his teammate Ghiotto, stealing P3 from him on lap 21 (of 25). Until the end of the race, Leclerc built up an impressive gap of more than 25 seconds to Rowland, who lost P2 in a drag race against Markelov from the last turn to the finish line.
