GP3 Series: Russell beats ART Grand Prix teammates to win at Monza
George Russell (ART Grand Prix) wins the GP3 Series race at Autodromo Nazionale Monza in the sixth round of the season. It’s his fourth win of the season which exnteds his lead in the championship standings. It’s also the 1-2-3 victory for ART Grand Prix as Jack Aitken and Anthoine Hubert finished in P2 and P3 respectively. Rain postponed the race from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning and officials cancelled the second race.
Nirei Fukuzumi was supposed to start at the front of the grid thanks to his fastest time in a practice session because there was no qualifications due to bad weather. But, technical problems prevented him to take part in a race and he stayed in the pits, so his teammate Russell easily converted front-row start into the lead. Other two ART Grand Prix drivers Hubert and Aitken were following Russell.
The race was interrupted soon after the start following a collision between Leonardo Pulcini and Alession Lorandi. The barrier had to be repaired so Safety Car spent eight laps on the track. After the restart, on lap 10, Hubert passed Russell but Englishman reclaimed the lead on lap 12.
Virtual Safety Car interrupted the race on lap 13 when Juan Manuel Correa stopped on the track following his collision with Arjun Maini. On lap 15, all three ART Grand Prix cars run side by side into turn 1 with Aitken getting into the lead. In the next visit to turn 1 Russell returned to P1.
Niko Kari crashed out from P4 on lap 20, causing another Safety Car intervention. Marcos Siebert (Campos Racing) inherited fourth place, ahead of Trident’s duo Ryan Tveter and Giuliano Alesi. Other point scorers are Tatiana Calderon, Julien Falchero, Kevin Jorg and Bruno Baptista.
