ADAC F4 Championship: Joel Eriksson dominates the day at Spa
The young talents of the ADAC Formula 4 are contesting their third race weekend of the 2015 season at Grand Prix circuit at Spa-Frankorchamps. The championship leader Joel Eriksson (Motopark) posted the best times of any of the 39 drivers and secured the best starting position for the first race on Saturday at 14:45 and for the second race on Sunday at 13.25.
Qualifying is held in two groups due to the large number of entrants. The starting grid of the first race is determined by the results from the fastest lap times in qualifying. The driver with the fastest time of anyone starts from pole position. The fastest driver from the other group takes second place on the grid. The remaining cars slot into position behind the two fastest drivers on the grid according to their qualifying group. This ensures the greatest possible degree of equality when weather conditions are changeable.
That exactly happened at Spa, because second group of drivers were driven on a wet track. Eriksson’s fastest lap in Groip 1 was 2:23.272 minutes, while Robert Shwartzman (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) in Group 2 needed 2.36.190 minutes for his fastest lap.
Rookie Guan Yu Zhou (Prema Powerteam) took second place in Group 1. Third was Marvin Dienst (HTP Juniorteam). Ralf Aron (Prema Powerteam) posted a second time in Group 2 and will be fourth on the grid behind Yu Zhou. Dienst will share the third row with a newcomer to the series Lando Norris (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport). Janneau Esmeijer (HTP Juniorteam) and Joey Mawson (Van Amersfoort Racing) will start from seventh and eighth place.
The second best lap times of the session determine positions on the grid for the second race. Once again, Joel Eriksson had a best time. Ralf Aron in Group 2 secured second place on the grid. Janneau Esmeijer and Robert Shwartzman will start from the second row. The two rookies Yu Zhou and Lando Norris occupy grid positions five and six. Marvin Dienst and Harrison Newey (Van Amersfoort Racing) complete the top eight.
Mick Schumacher had 8th time in Group 1 and will start 15th on the grid in Race 1. His second best lap time was bad and will start as 27th in Race 2. The top 10 from the first race start the third race (Sunday at 17.00) in reverse order. So, the race winner lines up in P10 on the grid and the tenth placed driver occupies the pole position for the third race. The cars that finished from eleventh place downwards will line up in the same positions in the final race.
