ADAC F4: Third race at Red Bull Ring also stopped before the end

It seemed like the third race of the ADAC F4 Championship at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg was about everything else but racing. The drivers of the planned 30-minute-long races actually raced for only 5-6 minutes. The winner of the race was Australian Joey Mawson (Van Amersfoort Racing) while Janneau Esmeijer (HTP Junior Team) ranked second. At third place was David Beckmann (Mucke Motorsport).

When one has such a big grid (36 cars) with very young and unexperienced drivers, one can expect nothing but problems.
In the first lap itself, two accidents happened and five drivers retired. The track workers had to repair the fence and the race was red-flagged.

It was decided that the race would be resumed as a 15-minute-long race and under safety car. After a few laps the safety car race restarted. The leader was Joey Mawson ahead of Janneau Esmeijer, both of whom survived problems in the first lap.

Drudi and Swartzmann retired so that promoted David Beckmann to third place. After 5 minutes of racing, the standings were unchanged and a safety car once more was out. There was no restart any more and the race was stopped 4,3o minutes before the planned ending.

“My first race win in the ADAC Formel 4 – incredible. This victory is for my team-mate Mick. I hope he makes a speedy recovery”, said Mawson. The reference was to Mick Schumacher who had to miss out on the third race because of an injury in  second race crash.

Joel Eriksson (Motopark), winner of the Race 1 and Race 2 in Spielberg, leads the championship after six races of the season. The Swedish youngster has 74 points, one more than Marvin Dienst (HTP Junior Team). Mawson in third has 64 points. Next races are scheduled for 19 to 21 June at Spa-Frankorchamps.
