Ferrari, Vettel tops second free practice in Austria

Ferrari beat Mercedes in the second free practice of Formula 1 Austrian GP at Red Bull Ring. Sebastian Vettel set the best lap time and Kimi Raikkonen finished third, while Nico Rosberg was second.

But, Mercedes had a better start after Lewis Hamilton set first time to beat, but not for long as his teammate overtake him soon after. Turn 1 again seemed to be too complicated for many drivers. Daniil Kvyat, Roberto Merhi, Max Verstappen, Romain Grosjean, Carlos Sainz, Rosberg and Raikkonen all been off the track at same place just it was in the first free practice.

Ferrari looked far more competitive on soft tyres during the second session. Vettel and Raikkonen were very fast and at the middle of the practice German was on the top with Finn lying on third, while Rosberg was second just 0.011 seconds behind Vettel.

With 20 minutes to go, yellow flag was shown after Roberto Merhi slipped of the track at turn 3. McLaren’s agony continued as Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button both had to finish session earlier, while Red Bull’s were not so good as they were during the first practice.

With just few minutes left, yellow flag was shown again after Pastor Maldonado, who was fourth at the moment, has gone off, again at turn 3, with a lot of gravel loaded on the track. In the last couple of laps Lewis Hamilton tried to beat best time but it was obvious that he lacks few tenths. Reigning champion finished fifth in the second practice unable to reduce the gap to less than half second.
