Formula 3 Euro: Jake Dennis wins problematic race at Spa
After first troubleless race of Formula 3 European Championship on Saturday morning at Spa, second race at the same track reminded us on chaotic Monza race few weeks ago, with three major incidents and safety car periods.
Safety car exited the pits in Lap 3, after Kang Ling (Mücke Motorsport), Julio Moreno (ThreeBond with T-Sport) and Tatiana Calderon (Carlin) crashed. In a lap before that Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam) jumped to leading position over Mikkel Jensen (Mücke Motorsport), who started from pole-position.
Decisive moment, soon after restart, was stupid move of Lance Stroll who attempted to defend his leading position in Lap 6. He blocked Mikkel Jensen and Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam), when both attacked him, but unfortunately his move was too careless and result was catastrophic. All three drivers crashed and retired with severely damaged cars.
Jake Dennis, who was fourth until that moment, took the lead after restart and was in front next three laps, when race was stopped because another dangerous accident. Gustavo Menezes (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) touched Brandon Maisano’s car and go airborne. He flipped and broke the safety roll bar. Fortunately Menezes walked away unhurted. Race wasn’t restarted any more and Jake Dennis crossed the finish line behind safety car.
Second on the podium was Santino Ferrucci (Mücke Motorsport), third was Sergio Sette Camara (Motopark). Other point scorers were Brandon Maisano (Prema Powerteam), Dorian Boccolacci (Signature), Charles Leclerc (Van Amersfoort Racing), Maximilian Gunther (Mücke Motorsport), Raoul Hyman (Team West-Tec), Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) and Alessio Lorandi (Van Amersfoort Racing).
