George Russell (ART Grand Prix) scored a victory in the first race of the fifth round of the 2017 GP3 Series today at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The 19-year-old Briton was the fastest qualifier for the third time this season and he converted pole position into his third victory this year.

Russell had to fight for the win because he lost a lead on the opening lap to his teammate Nireo Fukuzumi, who started next to him from the front row. Russell has reclaimed the lead on lap 4. Four laps later, Fukuzumi lost one more place to Jack Aitken, who is also driving for ART Grand Prix. Fukuzumi returned to P2 on lap 15, but not for long, as Aitken took P2 back on the next lap.

Other point scorers at Spa are Arjun Maini, Dorian Boccolacci, Ryan Tveter, Giuliano Alesi, Julien Falchero, Niko Kari and Kevin Jorg.

After today’s race, Russell and Aitken retained their leading positions in the championship. Fukuzumi progressed from P4 to P3, passing Anthoine Hubert who retired today. The second GP3 Series race at Spa is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
