  • Maximilian Gunther

Maximilian Günther (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) is the unexpected winner of the second race of Formula 3 European Championship at Norisring. The young German, who started from 12th position on the grid, jumped on the top from fourth position four minutes before the end of the race, after three drivers in front of him almost crashed on the first hairpin of Norisring street circuit.

Before that decisive moment, we saw an interesting battle for victory between Alexander Albon (Signature), George Russel (Carlin) and Charles Leclerc (Van Amersfoort Racing). At the end, Albon earned second place and Leclerc was third, while Russell dropped to fifth behind Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam).

Albon started from pole position and was leading until Lap 30. He fought it out with Russell at the beginning of the race, until first Safety Car period in Lap 3, caused as a result of Ryan Tveter‘s crash.

The second exit of the Safety car was caused in Lap 15 because of Michele Beretta‘s overturn. The third break followed after Jake Dennis, Antonio Giovinazzi and Santino Ferrucci crashed in Lap 21, while fighting for third. The fourth and final Safety car exit was caused in Lap 27 when Pietro Fittipaldi and Kang Ling crashed.

After all those chaotic moments and 36 laps of racing, the luckiest racers were winner Maximilian Günther and leader of the championship Charles Leclerc, because their three main rivals from the top of the standings ended without points.

Other points scorers in Top 10 are Mikkel Jensen, Gustavo Menezes, Dorian Boccolacci, Alessio Lorandi and Brandon Maisano.
