Hamilton fastest despite crash

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was the fastest in both Free Practices before the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada in Montreal.

During the first session at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the reigning champion recorded a lap time of 1:16.212, zooming past ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg by 0.415 seconds.

Lotus driver Romain Grosjean. surprised everyone by managing to finish just 1.5 seconds behind Hamilton for 3rd place.

The second season proved to be a lot more exciting than the first. Hamilton set the time at 1:15.988 just before the heavy rain began, but soon after, he decided to go out on the wet track with intermediate tyres and went straight into the hairpin damaging the nose of his Formula 1 car.

The session was immediately red flagged and practically came to an end  as it was too risky for the others to continue in case there were more accidents. Luckily, Hamilton wasn’t injured in the crash as he had enough time to slow down before the hit.

Ferrari had the second and third best lap results during the second Free Practice session as Sebastian Vettel was 0.316 seconds behind the championship leader, while Kimi Raikkonen was 0.322 seconds slower. Nico Rosberg was fourth at 1:16.440 seconds while Pastor Maldonado had a solid performance with fifth best result – 1:16.600.
