Wehrlein signs with Manor F1 team
Reigning DTM champion Pascal Wehrlein will make his debut in Formula 1 after an agreement made with Manor F1 team. The talented German, who is a Mercedes protege, filled one of the Manor’s empty seats after long negotiations between the two teams.
Wehrlein is one the highly-rated youngsters in the world of racing. Before becoming the youngest ever DTM champion, he was also ADAC Formel Masters champion in 2011, while in 2012 he became Formula 3 Euro Series runner-up. Wehrlein made a debut in DTM in 2013, and since 2014 he has been combining his duties in the series with his role of Mercedes Formula 1 team reserve driver.
“The discussions were led by Toto Wolff for me. He helps me a lot, for which I am very, very grateful,” said Wehrlein while speaking to Auto Bild.
Manor and Mercedes still have empty seats
Now he will have a new opportunity to prove his talent in a revamped Manor F1 team which will run cars with Mercedes engine. Manor still have to name their second driver for the 2016 campaign, and they will probably choose between Alexander Rossi, Rio Haryanto and Will Stevens.
At the same time, Mercedes have to decide their drivers line-up for the new DTM season after they lost their best driver from last year.
