The Portuguese DTM and Formula E star Antonio Felix da Costa (Carlin) is on a mission to repeat his Macau GP triumph from 2012 as he wins the Qualification Race on Saturday to secure a pole position for Sunday’s main race of the 2016 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix.

Felix da Costa started from third place but progressed into second on the opening lap. The Macau Guia Circuit took his first victims early in the race, as Maximilian Günther, Lando Norris and Anthoine Hubert all clipped the outside barrier exiting Mandarin in separate incidents. The most spectacular crash was when Hong Li Ye hit Daiki Sasaki from behind, flying over Sasaki’s head.

Front row starter Callum Ilott led under the Safety Car but upon the restart Antonio Felix da Costa jumped into the lead at Lisboa corner. Felix da Costa increased his advantage over Ilott and controlled the rest of the race, crossing the finish line eight-tenths of a second ahead of Van Amersfoort’s youngster.

Felix da Costa and Ilott will start from the front row in tomorrow’s main race, ahead of Sergio Sette Camara and Kenta Yamashita. Pole man George Russell finished fifth, ahead of defending Macau GP champion Felix Rosenqvist. Another DTM star Daniel Juncadella took seventh place.
