Markelov wins F2 Sprint race at Spielberg, Leclerc spun off and retired

  • Artem Markelov, Formula 2

Artem Markelov (Russian Time) wins the eventful Sprint race of the FIA Formula 2 Championship weekend at Red Bull Ring. Markelov started from pole and led for all 28 laps to score his second win of the season. Alexander Albon (ART Grand Prix) and Oliver Rowland (DAMS) completed a podium. Luca Ghiotto (Russian Time) finished fourth after an intensive fight against Antonio Fuoco (Prema).

The race was interrupted two times in the early phase. The Safety Car was out for the first time on the opening lap after an accident at the start/finish straight. Ralph Boschung stalled on the start and Raffaele Marciello didn’t manage to avoid him. Boschung continued the race, the Italian was out.

After a restart on lap 5, two Prema Racing drivers Antonio Fuoco and Charles Leclerc collided when fighting for P4. Fuoco survived an accident and defended his position while the championship leader had to retire. Despite that retirement, Leclerc remained in the lead, as he built up a big gap with four wins so far, including yesterday’s win.
