Formula V8 3.5 at Aragon: Aurelien Panis wins Race 2

  • Formula V8 3.5, Aragon, Aurelien Panis

Aurelien Panis (Arden Motorsport) wins the second race of the season opening-round of the new Formula V8 3.5 championship at the Motorland Aragon. The 21-year old French driver, son of the former F1 star Olivier Panis, scored his maiden victory in the V8 Formula competition after he finished 12th in the last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

Panis started from the front row, next to the poleman Tom Dillmann (AV Formula) and he took the lead on the opening lap. Dillmann was chasing Panis but after the obligatory pit stops and tyre changes the gap increased to more than two seconds and Panis comfortably won. Rene Binder (Lotus), who started from seventh place on the grid, reached the podium.

Binder moved to the third place after three drivers who were in the front dropped off to the back of the field. The winner of the first race Louis Deletraz (Fortec Motorsports) and Matthieu Vaxiviere (SMP Racing) had a contact, which resulted in Vaxiviere’s retirement. Deletraz felt to the last place but later he progressed through the field and took fifth place, behind Yu Kanamaru (Teo Martin Motorsport).

Johnny Cecotto Jr (RP Motorsport), Roy Nissany (Lotus), Alfonso Celis Jr (AVF), Pietro Fittipaldi (Fortec Motorsports) and Matevos Isaakyan (SMP Racing) completed the top 10. Egor Orudzhev (Arden Motorsport), who started fourth and dropped to 13th in the opening lap, was on the way to top 10 but the contact with Isaakyan on the penultimate lap put him away of the points.

Formula V8 3.5 drivers will be again at the track next weekend at the Hungaroring.
