Keeping Your Car on the Road
When most people think about keeping their car running smoothly, they jump straight to oil changes and tire rotations. But oddly enough, a lot of folks forget that something like car insurance is just as essential.
Well, it doesn’t make your engine purr, but it does keep you protected while you’re out there racking up my old stodging potholes and hoping the guy behind you actually uses his indicator.
Luckily, keeping your car on the road doesn’t have to feel like a second job. With some planning and a few good habits when you drive, you can keep things rolling for years to come.
The first thing to consider is maintenance. It’s a predictable option, but skipping routine car services is like skipping your eye appointments. You might get away with it for a little while, but eventually something’s going to hurt and you’re going to need new glasses. Regular oil changes are the foundation of a healthy engine. The oil keeps everything lubricated and running at a good temperature, and when it gets old and grimy, your engine works harder than it needs to. Checking your car fluids like coolant, brake and transmission is all a quick way to prevent any big problems.
Next, think about your tires. They’re the only part of your car touching the road, so it does make sense to keep them in good shape. Proper tyre pressure helps you get better gas mileage, improves your handling and prevents uneven wear. A quick look once a month can save you from a blowout or a premature tyre shopping adventure. And while you’re at it, rotating them every so often keeps everything wearing down at the same rate. This means more miles before you have to replace them.
Another thing that most drivers forget is the battery. It doesn’t ask much from you, but when it dies, it dies dramatically, and usually when you’re late, tired, or holding a screaming child and an iced coffee. Testing the battery once or twice a year can help you to catch a weak one before it strands the car and you.
If we’re talking about keeping your car on the road, just don’t forget about the interior care. It’s not going to affect the performance of the car, but it does keep you feeling less stressed. Keeping your dashboard clean, your upholstery, vacuum down, your window streak free will help you to keep your car feeling newer for longer.
The last thing to consider is paying attention to the weird stuff. If there’s a strange smell, a new sound or a vibration that wasn’t quite there yesterday? Those are the clues that your car is telling you that something’s wrong. Most issues do start small with a car and they grow. Catching them early can spare you from major repairs. If you’re not sure, take your car to a mechanic and they can take a quick look.
It’s not about obsessing over every detail, but about staying aware of what your car needs and how it’s supposed to sound and smell. Treat it well and it will keep you moving.
