Ricardo Teixeira and Tom Onslow-Cole join Electric GT Drivers' Club
Ricardo Teixeira and Tom Onslow-Cole confirm their participation in the 2016 Electric GT Championship, the inaugural season of the world’s first 100% zero-emissions GT championship. The Electric GT Drivers Club has eight members so far, as Teixeira and Onslow-Cole join previously confirmed six racers: Stefan Wilson, Vittoria Vicky Piria, Dani Clos, Leilani Münter, Tom Coronel and Alice Powell. They would be a part of the 20-driver grid in the identical Tesla Model S race cars.
London-based Tom Onslow-Cole is one of the front-running international GT racers in recent years, with 2015 24H Series title in his pocket and several high-profile endurance racing victories recorded this year. Earlier in a career, Onslow-Cole has enjoyed a great deal of success in both touring car racing, winning the British Renault Clio Cup and contesting in the British Touring Car Championship, where he seven wins and 36 podiums.
Onslow-Cole said: “I’m really pleased to be involved in such an innovative step forward in GT racing, when I first saw the announcement I knew the Electric GT Championship was something I wanted to be involved with. Currently my career in GT racing is going from strength to strength, but I believe you should always be mindful of the future in order to keep powering forwards.“
Lisbon-born Ricardo Teixeira holds dual Portuguese-Angolan nationality and became the first Angolan to drive a Formula One car when he tested for Team Lotus in 2011. Before spending a season as a test and reserve driver for Team Lotus, Teixeira raced in the British Formula 3, GP2 Series and Formula Two. After leaving Lotus, he spent two more seasons in the GP2 Series before becoming a racing instructor.
Teixeira said: “I am delighted to join the EGT Drivers’ Club and look forward to being a part of this fantastic championship. The EGT Tesla Model S looks awesome, and I’m ready to get behind the wheel. I feel proud to be here in the early stages of this and thrilled to enter the ‘Age of Light“.
