Historic victory for Jamie Whincup at Sydney Motorsport Park

Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Holden) breaks all-time win record in the V8 Supercars Championship with today’s victory in the second race of the Red Rooster Sydney SuperSprint at Sydney Motorsport Park. Whincup was already a record holder with six titles on his account and now he also holds a record with 106 race wins, beating his Triple Eight teammate Craig Lowndes by one win.

Whincup scored his 106th career win thanks to clever strategy on fuel and tyres in a race which he started from P3, behind Ford’s Scott McLaughlin and Chaz Mostert. After 52 laps, Whincup has won for the second time this season, beating yesterday’s winner Fabian Coulthard and reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen.

Current championship leader Scott McLaughlin finished fourth to defend his lead, but he now has just twelve points more than Jamie Whincup (2058:2046). Fabian Coulthard is third with 1951 points.

The next VASC event is Sandown 500 on September 17.
