World RX: Mattias Ekström returns to the top podium spot
Mattias Ekström returns to the top podium spot in the FIA World Rallycross Championship after almost five months. The Swedish driver has won the World RX event today at Estering in Buxtehude, Germany, in the 11th round of the 2017 season. It’s his fourth win of the season after he triumphed in three opening events of the season (Barcelona, Montalegre, Hockenheimring).
Three more finalists at Estering were Petter Solberg, Niclas Gronholm and Kevin Hansen. Solberg made a heroic effort to return into the championship after a nasty accident in the previous round in Latvia two weeks ago. At Estering, he was the best in the intermadiate standings after he won Q3 and Q4 on Sunday morning. The winners of Q1 and Q2 on Saturday were Mattias Esktrom and Timmy Hansen.
Johan Kristoffersson (PSRX Volkswagen Sweden), who already secured the 2017 World RX championship title, finished fifth in the Semi Final 1. A fight for the second place in the championship is still open between Solberg and Ekstrom, with one more World RX round scheduled for November 11-12 in South Africa.
