BTCC: Round 8 at Rockingham - Preview
Eighth round of 2015 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will take place at Rockingham Circuit in Northamptonshire. Rockingham has been a part of BTCC since 2003 and as the most recently built racing facility in the UK, it provides unparalleled panoramic views of the entire circuit from the goliath grandstands and is also a fantastic challenge for the drivers and teams. Rockingham is a circuit that doesn’t favour any particular car, so we can expect three unpredictable races.
Last year Colin Turkington won twice and Rob Austin was the winner of third race. Both of them surely have similar plans for the next weekend. But of course many other drivers would like to stand on Rockingham’s podium spots, starting with current championship leader Jason Plato (Team BMR). After a not so good weekend at Knockhill Plato remained in the lead with an 11-point gap ahead of Gordon Shedden (Honda Yuasa). Shedden’s team-mate Matt Neal lies on third with further 11 points down.
Turkington (Team BMR) is fourth with 221 points, just two more than fifth placed Andrew Jordan (MG Triple Eight. Best placed West Surrey Racing BMW driver is Andy Priaulx on sixth spot, but he will miss Rockingham due to clashing commitments in ELMS. His team-mate Sam Tordoff is seventh with 205 points. As you see points differences are so small that every lost spot at Rockingham can be decisive for the title fight.
Three BTCC races will take place on Sunday (11.37, 13.52 and 16.40). In addition to the BTCC battles, there will be a huge number of supporting races – MSA Formula Championship, Renault UK Clio Cup, HSCC Super Touring Car Championship, Ginetta Junior Championship and Ginetta GT4 SuperCup.
