GP2: Sirotkin wins maiden pole position
Rapax team driver Sergey Sirotkin claimed maiden pole position for the GP2 race at Silverstone. He was just 0.185 seconds faster than championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix).
Richie Stanaway of Status Grand Prix and one of the local favorites Alexander Rossi of Racing Engineering will start from the second row as they finished third and fourth respectively, leaving Arthur Pic (Campos Racing) and Pierre Gasly (DAMS) on fifth and sixth place.
The places in the fourth row were won by Nobuharu Matsushita (ART Grand Prix) and Raffaele Marciello. Ninth was Oliver Rowland (MP Motorsport), while the tenth finished Julian Leal, driver of the Carlin Motorsport. Interestingly, Campos Racing’s Rio Haryanto, who was fastest during practice, finished 15th, but he had problems with his car and failed to complete.
Sirotkin managed to overtake Vandoorne in the closing minutes of the session and effectively stopped him from taking the eighth pole position in eight races. The driver from Belgium had a chance to improve his time, but made a mistake in the last lap, while the Russian took another couple of hundreths to confirm first place.
It was a very close qualifyng session at Silverstone as 15 drivers finished in one second interval, so we can definitely expect a very interesting race on Saturday, startin 15.40 CET.
