Hamilton fastest in FP2

Lewis Hamilton was the fastest in Free Practice 2 at Catalunya Circuit and announced another good weekend for Mercedes.

Daniel Ricciardo stayed out of second Free Practice because of the engine change, so it was another disappointing day for the Red Bull’s driver. Lewis Hamilton set early pace with 1:27.826 leaving Rosberg, Vettel and Raikkonen more than 1.2 seconds behind. After some 20 minutes, session was shortly red-flagged after Romain Grosjean lost a part of his Lotus.

Switching to softer tyres, Vettel set the new fastest lap with 1:27.260, but he didn’t stayed long at the top as Hamilton beat that time with 1:26.852. Rosberg was at third leaving Raikkonen at fourth and Verstappen at fifth position.

Williams struggled to find proper balance in that part of the practice session, both McLarens were too far from their rivals, as they were in the first session, while Lotus’ looked better than Saubers as both Swiss team’s car were out of top 10.

But, in the second half of the practice, McLaren showed huge improvement. In one moment, Button had sixth best time and Alonso was the tenth. Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat also was fast and was less than a second behind Hamilton.

At the end, Hamilton remained at the top, 0.408 faster than Vettel. Nico Rosberg finished 0.764 seconds behind his teammate, while Raikkonen 0.928 behind. Kvyat and Verstappen confirmed they are well prepared, while McLaren has a lot of reason to be optimistic after Jenson Button finished seventh.
