Formula 2: De Vries leads 1-2 finish for Rapax in Monaco

  • Monaco 2017 Formula 2

Nyck de Vries won the FIA Formula 2 Championship Sprint race at Monaco what is a maiden victory in the series for the young Dutch driver.

Pole sitter Johnny Cecotto Jr immediately lost the lead to his Rapax teammate Nyck de Vries, while Gustav Malja and Luca Ghiotto were right behind them. De Vries’ lead after the first half of the race was almost 9 seconds and it was obvious that only mechanical failure or mistake could prevent him from scoring the maiden victory in the series.

In a meantime, championship leader Charles Leclerc retired from the race, so he failed to finish both races at his home circuit while the winner of Friday’s race Oliver Rowland couldn’t move into the points.

At the end, de Vries enjoyed the convincing victory, almost 10s ahead of Cecotto, while Malja finished 3rd to score first podium place in 2017.
