Super Formula: Nakajima from pole to the first win of the season

Kazuki Nakajima (Vantelin Team Tom’s) opens a new season of the Japanese Super Formula Championship with a victory at Suzuka Circuit. A driver of the #37 Toyota started from pole and defended his lead to score his eight Formula Nippon/Super Formula victory in a career.

Other two podium scorers also started at front of the grid. Naoki Yamamoto (Team Mugen) started third and finished second, changing a position with defending champion Yuji Kunimoto (P.MU/Cerumo · Inging), who started from the second place and finished third.

Pierre Gasly is the best rookie

Nakajima was unchallenged from start to finish, after his strong getaway from pole position and making a pit stop during a Safety Car period. Yamamoto passed Kunimoto in the opening lap and they also retained their positions until the end. Behind their back, Hiroaki Ishiura secured fourth place, ahead of Andre Lotterer as the best non-Japanese driver in the fifth place.

Among the rookies, the GP2 Series champion Pierre Gasly was the best in the 10th place, losing a fight for P9 to Kamui Kobayashi. Another rookie from Europe, Felix Rosenqvist, finished 11th.

The round 2 of the 2017 Japanese Super Formula Championship is scheduled for May 27-28 at Okayama International Circuit.
