IMSA: Victories for BMW, Lexus at Virginia International Raceway

BMW Team RLL and 3GT Racing triumphed in the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR, the tenth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship that took place at Virginia International Raceway.

Alexander Sims and Connor de Phillippi scored their first win of the season in the GTLM class in the #25 BMW M8 GTE. In GTD class, Dominik Baumann and Kyle Marcelli captured their second win in the #14 Lexus RC F GT3, following their victory at Mid-Ohio earlier in the season.

BMW Team RLL has two crews on the GTLM podium because Jesse Krohn and John Edwards finished third in the #24 BMW M8 GTE, behind Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia in the #3 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R.

While Sims was controlling his GTLM class lead in the closing laps, the fight in GTD class lasted until the last turn. In the end, Baumann crossed the finish line 0.567 seconds ahead of Patrick Long in the #58 Porsche 911 GT3 R of Wright Motorsports. Long steals P2 in the last lap from Katherine Legge in the #86 Acura NSX GT3 of Meyer-Shank Racing. There were two female drivers on the GTD podium as Long was sharing a car with Christina Nielsen. Katherine Legge’s partner was Alvaro Parente.

The next IMSA SportsCar Championship round would be opened for all three classes and it is scheduled for September 9 at Laguna Seca.
