Kvyat faster than the Mercedes pair in FP2
Daniil Kvyat was the fastest during second free practice of Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. Red Bull driver, in another rainy session, set the lap time of 1:48.277 what was enough to pip both Mercedes drivers.
Nico Rosberg was second, just 0.023s behind the Russian, while Lewis Hamilton set third best lap time with 1:48.853. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) finished fourth and Ferrari’s pair Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen completed top six in the second free practice.
Carlos Sainz, who was the fastest in the first free practice was seventh this time with a gap of 2.141s, just in front of his Toro Rosso teammate Max Verstappen. Felipe Nasr in the Sauber was ninth, while Pastor Maldonado in the Lotus has completed top 10 in FP2.
Best results were achieved during first half of the practice on intermediate tires, on a wet track, but the rain was not falling. The majority of the field opted to avoid risks as the conditions worsened during the second half of the session, especially as the rest of the weekend is expected to be dry.
Unlike in FP1 when only 12 drivers set lap times, only Valtteri Bottas decided not to participate in FP2, explaining his decision by saying he wants to preserve his tires for the rest of the weekend.
