Rosberg tops FP2 at Circuit Hermanos Rodriguez
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was the fastest during Free practice two for the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix at Circuit Hermanos Rodriguez.
As the dark clouds were approaching, many drivers decided to quickly go out, but after just five minutes, the session was red-flagged as Max Verstappen, who was the fastest in the first Free practice, hit the wall, damaging his Toro Rosso enough to miss rest of the session.
Soon after, the practice was restarted and Valtteri Bottas also had accident when lost his brakes and spun hitting the wall, but was lucky enough just to lose the front wing. Even though the track was dry, many drivers coped with grip and we could see many spins and off track moments.
Lewis Hamilton was the fastest after 30 minutes (1:24.016), wtih just five drivers within a second. Changing to soft tyres drastically improved lap times, and Mercedes looked unbeatable again. Nico Rosberg was on top for short, before Hamilton was the first to go under 1:22. But German quickly hit back, going 0.4s faster – 1:21.531.
Just after the start of the second half of the session, light rain has started and session was stopped again when Romain Grosjean parked his smoking Lotus on the grass, inside of the circuit. Red Bulls were very fast again, so Kvyat and Ricciardo jumped just behind Rosberg.
Those standings remained unchanged until the end. Hamilton had fourth best lap, beating Ferraris – Vettel on fifth and Raikkonen on sixth position. Two McLarens, Alonso on eighth and Button on ninth, separated two Williams’ with Bottas on seventh and Massa on tenth place.
