Formula Renault 3.5 Series: Rowland's third victory of the season

Oliver Rowland (Fortec Motorsport) gained his third season’s victory in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series today at Hungaroring. Rowland has won ahead of  Matthieu Vaxiviere (Lotus) and Gustav Malja (Strakka Racing) in the race which was much less exciting than yesterday’s race on the same track. In fact, many will say it was quite a boring race, because overtaking and changes of positions was very rare.

The most important move of the race was Rowland’s jump at the start from fifth to first position. Before the first turn he took the lead and after that nobody was able to outpace him. Pole-sitter Vaxiviere was trying, but at the end the difference was of 1.5 seconds.

Gustav Malja also had a good start, moving from sixth to third position and retained this position through all the 27 laps. Jazeman Jaafar (Fortec Motorsport) was in fourth position. After the start he dropped from third starting position to 12th, but was first in the obligatory pits and with new tyres he was able to get extra speed and jumped to fourth place.

Fifth placed Pietro Fantin (International Draco Racing) was penalized after the race with 10 seconds, because of crossing the pit exit line, so he dropped to 8th spot. In front of him were Tom Dillmann, Tio Ellinas and Roberto Merhi.

The other two drivers in the Top 10 who scored some points, were Nyck De Vries and Meindert Van Buuren.  A total of 20 drivers started the race. Philo Paz Patrick Armand retired in lap 7, while Sean Gelael had an accident and hit the barrier in lap 13.

Rowland is first in the championship standings, with 123 points. Vaxiviere has 107 points and Jaafar is third with 87 points. Stoneman (68) and Dillmann (55) follow in the points tally.
