Giovinazzi wins at Sepang and takes the GP2 Series overall lead

  • Antonio Giovinazzi

The Prema Racing’s driver Antonio Giovinazzi won the GP2 Series feature race in Malaysia and took the lead in the championship from his teammate Pierre Gasly.

Gassly missed an excellent opportunity to strengthen his lead in the series after starting from pole position but his start was poor and he was overtaken at Turn 1. Raffaele Marciello, Giovinazzi and Sergey Sirotkin were in front of him but Marciello wasn’t able to follow his rivals for a long time.

Until the end of the race it was the battle between Giovinazzi and Sirotkin and the Italian was the one who was faster and more agile in the closing laps. Norman Nato (Racing Engineering) completed the podium finishing six seconds behind Sirotkin.
