V8 Supercars: Amazing Last lap victory for Van Gisbergen at Queensland Raceway

  • Shane Van Gisbergen, Queensland

What a day for Shane Van Gisbergen! He scored a victory in the first race of the Ipswich Supersprint at Queensland Raceway, by stealing the lead from his teammate Jamie Whincup in the last lap of the 38-lap race, thus preventing Whincup to score his 100th V8 Supercars victory. Craig Lowndes completed the podium for the 1-2-3 triumph of the Triple Eight’s Holdens.

Chris Pither and Chaz Mostert started the 16th race of the 2016 season from the front row, but they touched each other in the Turn 2 of the opening lap, allowing Whincup to take the lead. Since then, a six-time champion was in front until the last lap. He pitted on lap 8, while Van Gisbergen had a nine laps longer first stint. His fresher tires became the advantage in the closing laps, so he spoiled Whincup’s plan to take his 100th victory. For Van Gisbergen, this was a third victory in last four races and fourth win of the season.

Behind three Triple Eight’s Holdens, Prodrive duo Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert finished fourth and fifth respectively. Tim Slade was the last of all to stop on lap 24 and he converted his ninth starting position into sixth at the end. Will Davison, Rick Kelly, James Moffat and Chris Pither completed the top 10.
