Atlanta Motor Speedway – Hampton NASCAR Quad-Oval Guide

Originally published March 2016. Last updated September 2026: expanded Tier B circuit guide, facts table, table of contents, internal links, FAQ schema, and editorial refresh while preserving legacy narrative and images.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is a 1.54-mile (2.48 km) quad-oval in Hampton, Georgia, about 30 km south of downtown Atlanta and one of NASCAR’s fastest intermediate tracks. Opened in 1960 as Atlanta International Raceway, it became a Speedway Motorsports property after Bruton Smith’s 1990s investment and a 1997 quad-oval rebuild that moved the start/finish line to the east. NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series races anchor the calendar without restrictor plates.

Atlanta matters because it sits in the same Southeast superspeedway cluster as Charlotte Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, and Bristol Motor Speedway — venues that define how Americans experience 300 km/h stock-car racing on worn asphalt.

Hard times after the 1960 opening

Builders finished a 2.4 km oval in 1960, but facilities were bare-bones — legend recalls a three-hole outhouse as the only toilet and low first-row sight lines. Former ticket manager Frances Goss remembered fans on dirt banks behind wooden bleachers.

Revival under Bruton Smith and the 1997 quad-oval

Profitability improved after Bruton Smith bought the track and renamed it Atlanta Motor Speedway. New suites and hospitality followed, along with concerts and conventions. Speedway Motorsports now operates the venue as part of its national portfolio.

In 1997, three years after trackside condominiums opened, engineers converted the layout to a quad-oval and moved the start/finish line from the west to the east. Qualifying speeds routinely exceed 310 km/h without restrictor plates.

Real NASCAR speed on worn asphalt

Atlanta hosts NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, and Truck races each season. The intermediate distance rewards drafting and tyre fall-off — a contrast with short tracks such as Bristol.

Earnhardt, Petty, and Yarborough records

Dale Earnhardt leads Cup wins at Atlanta with nine victories and 26 top-five finishes. Richard Petty made 65 starts, scored 33 top tens, and completed 17,513 laps — the most of any driver. Cale Yarborough led 3,283 laps. Buddy Baker and Ryan Newman share the pole record with seven each.

Legends, drags, and former national series

Atlanta also hosts Legend Cars, the popular Friday Night Drags on pit road, and the Speed Tech Driving School when the oval is idle. Historically the track welcomed IMSA GT, IndyCar, Global Rallycross, and IROC.

Jimmy Carter, hurricanes, and the Winners Grandstand

Jimmy Carter worked as a ticket taker in the 1960s before attending races as Georgia governor and US President. In 2004, Hurricane Frances evacuees sheltered at the speedway; in 2005 tornado damage from Hurricane Cindy’s remnants caused more than $40 million in repairs.

The Winners Grandstand opened in 2006 with pit-road sight lines and a 1,000-seat suite overlooking the full circuit.
