Tom Coronel joins fast-expanding line up for EGT Championship

Tom Coronel is the latest driver on the entry list for the inaugural season ot the Electric GT Championship (EGT), which will start in 2017. The 44-year-old veteran, who is most known for his recent WTCC efforts and Dakar Rally adventures, is joining the Electric GT Driver’s Club which now has six members. Except Coronel, other drivers who already confirmed the participation in the 2017 EGT Championship are Stefan Wilson, Dani Clos, Vicky Piria, Leilani Münter and Alice Powell.

The plan for the inaugural season of the Electric GT Championship is to have twenty drivers in the identical Tesla Model S cars so, in the following months, plenty of new names would appear on the entry list. EGT will visit seven classic European circuits in its inaugural season – Paul Ricard, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Zandvoort, Brands Hatch, Mugello, Estoril and the Nürburgring, before staging three non-championship races in the Americas.

Tesla Model S as a race car

The idea of the world’s first zero-emissions GT championship is presented in March 2016. Since then, the organizers had few launching events all over the Europe and, which is more important, they successfully converted 100% electric Tesla cars into race cars. The lastest test of the new car took place at Circuit Paul Ricard, where former Formula 1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen tried the electric power and gave a green light to the new racing series. Tom Coronel also tested Tesla at Zandvoort and decided to enter the competition.

“The Electric GT Championship is a very interesting project and one that I’m excited to be a part of in these early stages. If you look around the world of motorsport it’s all heading towards this kind of racing, Formula E has already proven how successful it can be and even in F1 they’ve recently introduced the hybrid system,” said Coronel.
